Connections
Every single thing in our universe is connected, down to the smallest particle. Life cannot happen, or continue to happen, without these connections. This is described so well within the term, “The Web of Life,” since each strand in a web is connected in such a way that if one strand is affected, the entire web feels it. If too many srands are damaged permanently, the web falls apart.
From our human perspective, we know that we need each other to survive. Our human connections begin with our families, back to our ancestors, and forward to our future sons and daughters.
All other life we share our Earth with are also connected by intricate strands that are connected to us. If they become disconnected, it will bring us all down together. We humans are no more important than the tiniest protozoan that swims in our oceans. We too are the tiniest creatures, floating among the stars and planets that inhabit our universe. We would do so much better if we recognized our place, be it big or small, along with our connections as family to all else that surrounds us.
This year, we will explore our connections to each other, first with a look at the big picture out there in the cosmos, to the evolution of life and animal groups, and ultimately to our own evolution as humans. We will dive into who we are and where we come from by looking into our ancestors, our family trees, and for the oldest students - to our geneology as far back as we can go. This will help our kids to find their human connections as we continue to spin the web that connects us to all other forms of life on Earth.
We will also explore the important and vital connections with our world’s pollinators, who assure that life will continue by aiding our plants to reproduce and give us all food to sustain us.
It will be a yearlong journey of discovery of who we are, how we got here, and where we can hopefully choose to go in the future…

Each year we select a different theme to weave into the Montessori curriculum. We explore these ideas through our lessons, activities, and interactions with nature.
